Tsavo

The vast expanse of Tsavo, divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks, alongside the adjacent Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, presents a diverse landscape ranging from open plains to hilly terrain, all relatively near the Kenyan coastline. Tsavo East is famed for its large herds of “red elephants” that dust themselves with the park’s ochre soil, as well as lions, cheetahs, and diverse birdlife. Tsavo West offers a more varied topography with volcanic features, swamps, and the Mzima Springs, known for its rhino sanctuary and sightings of elephants, lions, leopards, and numerous bird species. The Taita Hills, a private conservancy bridging Tsavo East and West, provides a crucial wildlife corridor and is home to elephants, lions, cheetahs, and a variety of plains game, often with the added historical significance of World War I sites in the area, making this region a compelling blend of wildlife and coastal proximity.
