Mount Kenya

The majestic Mount Kenya, the highest peak in Kenya and the second highest in Africa, forms the heart of a diverse and captivating central region. Its slopes are home to the Aberdares National Park, renowned for its dramatic landscapes, waterfalls, and unique moorland vegetation, as well as being a sanctuary for black rhinos, elephants, and elusive bongo antelopes. To the north lies the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a pioneering wildlife haven famous for its rhino conservation efforts, including the last two northern white rhinos, and also offering chimpanzee sanctuary visits and lion tracking experiences. The nearby town of Nanyuki serves as a gateway to the region and a popular base for mountaineers preparing to hike Mount Kenya’s challenging trails, which offer varying levels of difficulty and breathtaking alpine scenery. Other activities around the central region include exploring coffee plantations, visiting local markets, and enjoying the cooler climate and scenic beauty of the highlands.
